From what is available on blogs led by Microsoft developers, it is clear that XNA Game Studio 4.0 is coming out really soon. What is it about? It still supports development of Windows and Xbox 360 games, but it also introduces development capabilities for Windows Phone. Shawn Hargreaves writes in his blog(short list of new features):
* New platform
– Windows Phone 7 Series

* New features
– Integrates with Visual Studio 2010
– Dynamic audio output
– Microphone input
– BasicEffect has four new siblings
– SkinnedEffect
– EnvironmentMapEffect
– DualTextureEffect
– AlphaTestEffect

* Improved portability and usability
– Collapsed graphics caps into just two profile levels: Reach and HiDef
– Many graphics API improvements
– This involves some breaking API changes
– Split Microsoft.Xna.Framework.dll into several assemblies, to make it more obvious which pieces are available on each platform

Week #10 Challenge: Windows Presentation Foundation

What is Windows Presentation Foundation? WPF is a component part of Microsoft .NET Framework (introduced in version 3.0 of .NET) that is a sub-feamework itself. It was designed to introduce rich UI capabilities to Windows applications. In WPF, the application UI is separated from the code. The UI is designed in a derivative of XML, called XAML (eXtensible Application Markup Language), while the application code can be written either in C# or VB.NET (managed C++ is not supported at this point). WPF offers support for 2D and 3D graphics in an application – in fact, applications built with WPF are rendered using Direct3D.

Challenge: Create an application in WPF that uses some of the new WPF features (customized UIs with 2D/3D graphics, WPF Broswer applications etc.)

What willl you need?

Visual Studio 2008 at least (Visual C# 2008 Express and Visual Basic 2008 Express work as well)

Basic knowledge of C# (or VB.NET) and XML
Ideas

An application to save TODO notes

A photo browser

An UI for an application that works with databases

A drawing application

A simple messenger
Here are a few screenshots of applications made using WPF:

To get started, take a look at this list of WPF resources. Also, we have a WPF & Silverlight forum here, so if you have any questions, you are more than welcome to ask those.

Also, we have a tutorial section for WPF & Silverlight, so you might want to check that one out first before you start.

We are looking forward to see your entries for this challenge!

Hi all,

currently i am trying to use a java app to read from my usb to serial port on my PC.

i research and found that Windows COM ports are not directly supported by Sun anymore. thus there is another package called rxtx.

JAVA: Serial Port access with javax.comm or rxtx on Windows, Linux etc.
i tried the above link with my app, however it return me portId=null;

from the link below:
New Windows Java Serial Com Port driver with proper handling of Timeouts
it stated that the usb to serial maybe a problem when using the rxtx package, and this winjcom maybe a good substitute.

however, is there any expertises can share their advice on how to use this winjcom.

thanks in advance.
any help will be greatly appreaciated.

Hi.
I quite new to this stuff and have to write a console program that would create windows, change and output their statuses.
It’s growing up enormously (for me), already 500 lines and it’s about half of it. I’m getting lost.

Here is the part of the code that causes troubles (or more precisely, where troubles happen. I don’t know where is the cause).

Dear All

I have adapted a C# application (written in VS 2005) to run along side a VB6 app. At the moment the VB 6.0 app dictates when the c# application is run.

Ideally what I would like to do is convert the C# application to a Windows Control Library to give the the VB 6.0 coder so he can use it as a component within his code.

I’m not sure whether this conversion is actually possible, or whether I would have to copy and paste the contols in the C# app into a new Windows Control Library project.

Any help/comments on this would be appreciated

cheers

Hello,

I am working on a personal project. I am trying to sense when a navigation software is speaking so i can mute the volume of a media player. Since there is no api available for this software i will need to implement some sort of hook. the thing is that i dont know much about hooking, but i would love to learn. i am using windows 7, but i would like it to work with xp and vista.

Does anyone know of any books that have some good info on hooking. I have been looking at a few, but the chapters are very basic and do not have enough info about how to figure out where to set the hook.

Thanks in advance
-Nick

This is a problem with BSD sockets on Ubuntu. I hope this is not the wrong place to ask this.

This is a problem with BSD sockets on Ubuntu. I hope this is not the wrong place to ask this.

I have a piece of code that should listen on DNS port 53 of the local machine, and handle DNS queries (responses and replies). If the code gets back a response with 0 answer sections, the code re-issues a query for a different DNS RR type. The code re-issues a query asking for a custom RR type. This packet is seen on the issuing machine’s tcpdump, but not on the tcpdump of the machine running the resolver. All packets are sent using UDP.

Two observations:

1. If I let my piece of code sleep a second before sending the packet, all’s successful! (I’ve commented out sleep in the code below).
2. If the application requesting a DNS query requests for the custom RR type (what should have been re-issued by my piece of code), the response is retrieved.

Please let me know if additional information would be useful

Thank you for your time,
Arun Madhavan
